Flotsam as Metaphor

I certainly do not profess to put my work on par with fiber artist Sheila Hicks, but I was amused when I came across these recent images of hers and their compatibility with my fiber flotsam experiments. Her 'Ringlets' (Paris, 1993) - constructed out of colored rubber bands and paper clips is a definite favorite of mine.

way back in 1982 as a somewhat raw trainee at the Adelaide Festival Centre Gallery my first task was to dry 500 green hospital gowns that had been borrowed so that Sheila Hicks could make an installation for the Festival. for some reason she changed her mind (and never came) and somehow the gowns had become wet in a leaky basement...
i strung them together by the sleeves and hung them across an outdoor open theatre, inadvertently (and in complete innocence) creating a Hicksian installation, much to the amusement and delight of passersby, who simply assumed this was "modern theatre"....
